Thing is, that means you have to invest karma and/or skill points into Cybercombat, and even if BF and/or Data Spike are situationally useful, as a Matrix character, you get significantly less value out of karma and/or points put into Cybercombat than you do from other skills, like EWar, Software for technos, Perception, Sneaking, Etiquette, a weapon skill, or extra specializations for your existing skills. Unless you like taking unresisted Matrix damage, you should have a fairly high Cybercombat rating if you want to ever use BF or Data Spike effectively. The bigger problem is that Brute Force is one of the only two relevant uses of Cybercombat, the other being Data Spike (Crash Program is a waste of time). There are situations where Brute Force can be better than HotF because you'd rather use Attack actions instead of Sleaze actions and/or you'd rather roll against your opponent's WIL than INT. BF is much better choice if you want to rush matrix to get the job done while doing it steady and safe (you loose only hp not the chances to win the job), while HOTF more subtle, but more "winner takes it all" approach. Other thing is even if Host/Device Knows on successful attack it still need to find Decker in order to fight it of, while BF is totally unnoticeable if failure. You can use Data Spike on RCC but what if Drones controlled via Host? Using HOTF in situations like that give Decker additional unnecessary risk to lend mark to his enemies and after that he loosing 1 pass to switch Attack to use ether Data Spike or anything else combat related. So your best choice is to take out control device of those Drones.
But let's say team run on some heavy armored Drones (a lot of them) and smuggled pistols doesn't do anything to them. If Decker try to snitch some file from the host or get in and sit while his team try to do some stuff in the building itself - than HOTF is your choice.
